On Saturday Chapel Hill reported its 3rd highest concentration of the year. At O’Reilly’s, the concentration was very low until late afternoon and the early evening peak of about 430 ppm still left the day’s average at 407 ppm, some 8 ppm below the value reported by CSIRO for well-mixed air at Kennaook/Cape Grim. This is not usual, although there are other recent reports of concentrations above forests having (on some days) averages some 10 ppm less than the northern hemisphere reference values, for example, above a Finnish boreal forest in 2018 and 2019. In that case, long days of photosynthesis would likely depress CO2 levels compared to well-mixed air.(See Fig. 4 from Faassen, Kim A. P., Linh N. T. Nguyen, Eadin R. Broekema, Bert A. M. There will soon be an opportunity to recalibrate the O’Reilly’s sensor, which will allow a check as to whether there may have been any downward drift contributing to this low value.
