Notable on Friday were the very high early morning values at Bellbird Park – in excess of 550 ppm – which fell significantly before daybreak, suggesting they were not just the result of typical atmospheric boundary layer trapping of air, because this normally lifts only when the sun rises. The evening storm front produced abrupt temperature, pressure and relative humidity changes, but with compensation for these improved in Phase 3 data, they did not show up in the CO2 data.
Today’s second chart is from a very mathematical but intriguing study of how city area and city population interact in their emissions effects. The authors show that U.S cities with large (>= 1 million) populations, higher population density is associated with lower emissions, while this is much less true for smaller population cities. “Our results suggest that the densification of large populated urban areas is likely to have important contributions to the reduction of urban CO2 emissions.”
