Brisbane CO2 for 12 December 2023

Please see here for details about the calibration improvements made since Phase 2. For the second time this week Petrie Terrace showed an abrupt early morning peak, which is not a typical pattern. An unexpected trend is for lower values overnight at Petrie Terrace than the other sites – this runs counter to the tendency for CO2 levels to be higher closer to the city centre, and warrants a closer look. As always, more sites will make it easier to understand such observations. Bellbird Park had a particularly prominent midday rise on Monday. Today’s second chart is from a study of CO2 in the Yellow River Basin, China, correlating levels recorded from the GOSAT and OCO-2 satellites with measures of land use change, night-time light levels, and population, together with their interactions.  The authors present an interesting discussion about the ways in which urbanisation influence carbon dioxide concentrations.
